The Valdez Native Tribe (VNT), formed in 1974, is the Tribal organization of the Native community of Valdez, Alaska. It is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides health, social, educational, and cultural services to the Alaska Native and American Indian beneficiaries living in the Valdez service area. Base roll membership is 205. The latest count (enrolled after the original base enrollment) is 174. Total membership is 379. There are currently 435 eligible beneficiaries who may qualify for either Indian Health Service or Bureau of Indian Affairs services.
The mission of the Valdez Native Tribe is to promote the unity, self-determination, and empowerment of the Alaska Native and American Indian beneficiaries residing in the Valdez area, by providing services that will strengthen, increase opportunities, and enhance the mental, physical and spiritual well being of our people, in harmony with our land and traditional values.
The Valdez Native Tribe is governed by a board of directors of seven individuals who are elected from and by the membership.
Our vision is to revitalize the traditional Chugach Native culture and language. The goal is to make Sugpiaq/ Eyak history and heritage a part of the regular school curriculum with support and direction from our Elders’ traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).
