Diabetes Care and Prevention

The Diabetes Prevention Program is designed to educate communities in the prevention and treatment of diabetes, promote village infrastructure for encouraging healthy lifestyles, track patients and those at risk of developing diabetes, and to prevent complications from the disease.  Additionally, the staff studies the risk factors and stays current with knowledge of diabetes to help those being treated and to enhance early diagnosis.   The program is run in partnership with the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) grant program on both the National and Regional level. Every year we strive to ensure all people with diabetes have the option to receive the recommended annual standards of diabetes care. The SDPI website is: https://www.ihs.gov/sdpi/. As part of the standards of care for diabetes it is essential to provide resources for diabetes self-management. Education and support in diabetes self-care allows the person with diabetes to guide and be the driver in their own diabetes care plan. The seven key areas in diabetes self-management are:

  • Healthy Eating
  • Taking Medication
  • Being Active
  • Monitoring
  • Problem Solving
  • Healthy Coping
  • Reducing Risks
